January 26th - 29th
Hello families!
We made a lot of progress in our learning and working together this week. We started learning about volleyball in PE, practicing our bumps, sets, and serves so far. Students also compeleted a Subtraction Check-In, which was sent home earlier this week. We are continuing to read and enjoy our new read aloud, Chasing Vermeer, delving into code deciphering and art mysteries.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can describe the geometric properties of regular and irregular polygons.
I can sort polygons according to geometric properties and describe the sorting rule.
I can classify polygons as regular or irregular, using geometric properties.
Grade 4:
I can investigate geometric properties.
I can identify relationships between the sides of a polygon, including parallel, equal length, or perpendicular, by measuring.
I can identify relationships between angles at vertices of a polygon, including equal, supplementary, and complementary, by measuring.
We began our geometry unit by exploring polygons and identifying their components (sides, vertices, and angles). Students learned that shapes can be classified as polygons if they are two-dimensional, closed, and have many straight sides. We also discussed how side length and angles can help us classify various polygons as regular or irregular. Students completed an activity, identifying rules for a group of polygons sorted in a venn diagram and justifying their answers with evidence.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3 and 4:
I can interpret feelings and moods visually.
I can use drawing tools to make a variety of lines
We explored the different elements of art and took part in an activity related to the element of line. We created art pieces as we let different styles of music guide us, and then took time to reflect on how different lines can convey emotion in our art. This was a highlight of the week and we loved sharing our creations with classmates.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can examine situations that require proactive planning by goal setting.
I can Identify respectful and positive interactions with others.
Grade 4:
I can examine the connection between perseverance and personal growth and learning by goal setting and reflection.
I can describe strategies to support conflict resolution such as, communicating respectfully, reflecting on actions taken, implementing appropriate solutions, and making repeated efforts to solve a problem.
This week took time to reflect on our health and wellness learning and how it supports us at school. We reviewed the Student Code of Conduct, and brainstormed ways we can support ourselves and our classmates at school.
We also continued our socio-emotional learning, exploring the staircase of honesty. We discussed how honesty can be seen as a staircase, where positive choices lead us up and dishonest choices can make us climb down. The students read through various scenarios, identifying how certain choices build trust, despite how difficult they may feel and how small dishonest choices can lead us into tricky situations where we may lose trust and harm relationships. However, there is always a way to climb back up the staircase. Students put their learning to practice by sharing what honesty means to them and reflecting on positive choices that they can make to hold themselves accountable.
Ways to Continue Learning at Home:
Have your student identify whether everyday objects at home can be classified as polygons.
Use this resource to generate Math Minute worksheets, which can support basic number fact recall and fluency.
Have your student share different ways to express line.
Celebrate Family Literacy Week with these resources.
Reminders:
Please sign and return Grade 4 Ski Trip forms ASAP.
