Hello parents!
We had a fantastic start to the school year, getting to know each other, learning, and having lots of fun!
One highlight from our first week was our Hexagon Art project. Students created colorful hexagons representing unique things about themselves, their favourite ____ and what they did over the summer. Next week, we will connect them to others’ hexagons to show all the similarities and connections we share. This is such a powerful way for the class to see how much they have in common, and create a strong sense of community right from the start.
We also played several whole class Math games, reinforcing place value. In particular, students loved playing ‘Beat the Teacher’, where I rolled a die and students filled out a place value table, one digit at a time, trying to create a number larger than mine. They definitely beat me on several occasions!
In addition to Art and Math, we started a fun writing activity, creating a ‘Failed Project’. We read The Barnabus Project, a story about a group of failed pet experiments, who break out of a lab and learn to celebrate their imperfectness. The students helped me brainstorm some features as a class for our classroom ‘Failed Project’. I will be drawing this creature for next week. Students also started their independent brainstorm, getting ready for their own creations.
I hope you have a fantastic weekend!
