September 22nd- 26th
Hello families! We had a wonderful week, welcoming the Fall Equinox, enjoying the brisk morning weather, and learning more about our role as treaty people.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can discuss the reasons treaties were negotiated and signed.
I can identify treaties on a map of Alberta.
Grade 4:
I can reflect on personal rights and responsibilities.
I can discuss ways relationships were built between First Nations and Europeans.
This week, we continued our discussion around maps and the students shared some great insights and wonders about various maps of Canada and Alberta. Some questions that arose were “What does confederation mean?”, “Why are some treaties numbered?”, “Why do the Metis peoples not have their own treaty?”, and “Why are some treaties still being negotiated?” Additionally, we celebrated Treaty 7 Day on Monday by learning and practicing to name Calgary in the various languages of the First Nations communities whose traditional territories are in Treaty 7. We continued our learning by further discussing “What is Treaty?”: exploring the perspectives of First Nations communities and the Crown/European colonists and their understanding of treaty.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3
I can identify the place value of each digit in natural number
I can express natural numbers using words and numerals
I can express various compositions of a natural number using place value
Grade 4
I can identify the place value of each digit in a number
I can determine the value of each digit in a number
I can express numbers using words and numerals
I can express various compositions of a number using place value
We are now wrapping up our place value unit and had an opportunity to share our learning by playing a game of Jeopardy. Students worked in their table groups to answer questions identifying the place value of digits, showing numbers in word form, expanded form, and as base ten models, and comparing numbers using less than or greater than. Next week, we will begin exploring mental math strategies for multidigit addition.
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3/4
I can extend brush skills and further experimentation with the medium so as to achieve special effects such as textures.
I can mix paints to show intensity of colour.
We kicked off our Art Cards project this week. Students are creating torn paper mountain landscapes, using acrylic paint to blend colours and ripping paper to create texture. We used a fun online tool to help us create our own unique colour recipes for our background and mountain colours. For example, adding 1 drop of yellow, 1 drop of red, 1 drop of magenta, and 1 drop of white gave us the shade “Salmon”. Students recorded their colour recipes on paper and began painting this afternoon. We discussed techniques to blend colours, such as swirling our brush in 2 or more colours, dabbing each colour on a corner of our brush and mixing on the paper, and layering colour while the paint is still wet.
Ways to continue the learning at home:
Grade 3:
Practice correctly saying numbers up to 999,999, making note of place value families.
Have your student show you ways to represent numbers:
Expanded form: 5,738 = 5000 + 700 + 30 + 8
Word form: five thousand, seven hundred, thirty-eight
Grade 4:
Practice correctly saying numbers up to 999,999.99, making note of place value families and decimal place value names (tenths and hundredths).
Have your student show you ways to represent numbers:
Expanded form: 5,738.12 = 5000 + 700 + 30 + 8 + 0.1 + 0.02
Word form: five thousand, seven hundred, thirty-eight and twelve hundredths
Upcoming Dates:
No school on Monday or Tuesday
October 3rd: Terry Fox Run
October 9th: Individual and Class Photos
