October 29th - 31st

Hello Grade ¾ families,

It was great to be back together again as a classroom community. We have been settling back into our routines and are happy to see each other again.

We spent time this week discussing rounding to the nearest ten and hundred. Students completed a mystery picture colouring activity by rounding numbers and colouring them in based on the colour that matched their rounded number. Next week, we will look at how rounding can be used to help estimate the sums to addition problems, as well as explore some mental math strategies.

During our literacy time, we learned a bit about morphology and word parts. We explored morphemes, including base words, prefixes, and suffixes and how adding prefixes and suffixes to base words changes their meanings. We delved into a specific lesson on the rules required to double the last consonant of a word when using certain suffixes (-er, -ed, est, ing, -y). Additionally, we ended our week with a fun ad lib activity, listing different parts of speech that we later added to a fun Halloween story. The results were quite funny and the students had a blast sharing with their classmates. Next week, we will look at the silent “e” and how that impacts adding suffixes to base words.

Reminders:

  • Monday, Nov. 3 is Picture Day!

  • Remembrance Day assembly Nov. 7 at 11:00 AM (arrive for 10:45 AM if you are joining us).

  • Please remind your student to bring back their library books prior to Friday every week. We have a few overdue books that Mrs. Bouchard would like back ASAP.

  • We take our learning outside often so please make sure to be dressed for the weather.

Finally, I wanted to express my gratitude to those of you who reached out through kind emails, thoughtful cards, or with an in person smile. Your support and compassion is seen and greatly valued.

Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Halloween to those who are celebrating!

Ms. Aida
