November 17th - 21st

Hello Grade ¾ families,

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can conduct an investigation to demonstrate changes of state.

  • I can describe solid, liquid, and gas states of matter in terms of the properties of shape and volume.

Grade 4:

  • I can collect reliable data during investigations.

  • I can collect valid data by accurately using tools or technology during investigations.

This week, we experimented with how materials affect the rate at which ice melts. We learned about what the molecules are doing when water is liquid vs when it is solid ice. In their table groups, students chose materials to add to their ice cubes to make them melt the fastest. We created a hypothesis and recorded our results in a table. Next week, students will explore creating a graph to represent their data, discussing results, and pondering on next steps to improve the experiment.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can use estimation to add when an exact sum is not needed or to check my answer.

Grade 4:

  • I can use estimation to check the reasonableness of my sum when adding.

This week, students explored how estimation can help us find sums when adding. We began our week with a candy estimation, where students estimated the amount of candy in a jar. Students were given a new clue each day to refine their estimation. On Monday, we will reveal the answer and share the candy.

Students also learned 3 strategies for estimating sums: rounding, compatible numbers, and clustering. They had the opportunity to put their learning into practice with a fun group game led by Ms. Andreea. Students had a blast working together to round, add, estimate, and solve word problems. Next week, we will be doing a review of estimating sums and completing an exit ticket to assess our learning.

Ways to continue the learning at home:

  • Continue to use our science minds around the house, identifying solids, liquids, and gases and looking for ways matter can change states.

  • Use this link to review estimating sums.

Reminder and Updates:

  • Fridays are library exchange days - please have books returned by Thursday each week.

  • Conferences are November 27th (PM) and 28th (AM). Booking is now open. Please bring your student with you.

  • December 11th - Photo Retakes and Winter Concert.
