January 5th - 9th
Hello Room 10 families!
It has been great to come together again as class, to share stories of our breaks, and settle back into routines this week. We started some new learning, as well as continuing to work on some projects from before the break, including our Northern Alphabet creative writing project. We also had fun supporting our kinder buddies with their art Winter tree art projects.
Learning Intentions
Grade 3:
I can use cursive handwriting to write some texts with appropriate letter formation, size, proportion, and slant.
Grade 4:
I can use cursive handwriting to write some texts with appropriate letter formation, size, proportion, and slant.
For our first week back, we explored goal setting and resolutions. We learned that many people quit their New Year’s resolution before the month of January is even over! In Room 10 we focused on choosing just one word to guide us in 2026; the word could be something we want to be or something we want to get better at. We began learning cursive and practiced writing our one word goal in cursive. Next week, we will start an art project combining the two!
Learning Intentions:
Grade 3:
I can subtract numbers up to 1,000 using Mental Math strategies.
Grade 4:
I can subtract numbers up to 10,000 using Mental Math strategies, including decimals up to hundredths.
This week, we practiced Mental Math strategies for subtracting, including counting back, counting up, chunking, and using base ten blocks (Grade 4). The students did a fantastic job, recalling previous knowledge from addition strategies to support them in their learning.
Next week, we will review our understanding and complete a knowledge check-in. We will also be taking a break for number sense and exploring geometry through polygons.
Ways to Continue Learning:
Have your student teach you a Mental Math strategy for subtraction.
Have your student practice writing the names of family members in cursive.
Reminders:
Papa John’s Fun Lunch on Thursday
Alien Inline starts Monday, January 12th for room 10.
Have a lovely weekend!
