February 2nd - 6th

Hello families!

We had a wonderful week of learning, welcoming a new month and warm weather.

Learning Intentions:

  • Grade 3:

    • I can describe the geometric properties of regular and irregular polygons.

    • I can sort polygons according to geometric properties and describe the sorting rule.

    • I can classify polygons as regular or irregular, using geometric properties.

  • Grade 4:

    • I can investigate geometric properties.

    • I can identify relationships between the sides of a polygon, including parallel, equal length, or perpendicular, by measuring.

    • I can identify relationships between angles at vertices of a polygon, including equal, supplementary, and complementary, by measuring.

We continued our geometry learning this week by discussing lines, angles, and geometric properties. The students explored lines (parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular) and angles (acute, obtuse, right) by representing them physically and with real world connections. For example, we discussed how right angles are only made with perpendicular lines and look like the letter “L”. The Grade 4’s extended their angle learning by working with protractors to measure angles (including complementary and supplementary angles), identifying parts of angles (arc, rays, vertex), and examining how geometric properties can be used to sort and label polygons. This morning, we completed a review activity before completing a check-in. Next week, we will continue our learning with an exciting polygon Art activity.

Learning Intentions:

  • Grade 3:

    • I can explain and discuss how plants use their senses to respond to sensory stimuli, including water, food, temperature, and light.

  • Grade 4:

    • I can identify the external structures of plants (roots, stems, leaves, flowers) and relate them to their functions.

    • I can discuss how plants detect sensory stimuli such as light, gravity, temperature, and touch which will help them grow and survive.

We have made our way back to Science this month, capitalizing on the warm weather to do some gardening! We began a Science project called “Plant A Seed and See What Grows”. After reviewing the plant life cycle and needs of plants, we learned about germination and were each given mystery seeds. We will be taking scientific notes and observations of the process as we investigate how plants respond to stimuli.

Ways to Continue Learning at Home:

  • Have your student identify angles and lines at home.

  • Continue learning about plant life by taking a walk in your community and making observations.

Reminders:
  • Valentines Day: If your student wishes to bring cards to school, pleasure ensure they are bringing one for every child in the class. We have 24 students. We also ask that we do not bring any cnady to school. Our card exchange will happen at the end of the day on Wednesday.

  • No School Thursday, Feb. 12th and Friday, Feb. 13th.

Have a fantastic weekend!
