March 9th - 13th

Hello families,

A big thank you to everyone who came out for Student-Led Conferences this afternoon. We had another great week of learning in Room 10, showing excellent sportsmanship during gymnastics, working on our read aloud projects, strengthening our understanding of multiplication and division, and ending our week with the Book Fair.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • Compose a product, using equal groups of objects.

  • Model a quotient by partitioning a quantity into equal groups or groups of a certain size, with or without remainders.

  • Visualize and model products and quotients as arrays.

  • Recognize interpretations of multiplication and division in various contexts.

  • Solve problems, using multiplication and division in sharing or grouping situations.

Grade 4:

  • Describe the factors of a number within 100.

  • Determine the first five multiples of a given number within 100.

  • Recognize the greatest common factor of two numbers within 100.

  • Describe a number as prime or composite.

The Grade 3 students have been absolute multiplication and division rockstars, representing their understanding in a multitude of ways. They have continued to use pictures to show equal groups, create arrays, and represent fact families. This week, we spent some time exploring repeated addition and repeated subtraction on number lines to represent multiplication and division problems. The students have also been working hard to decipher word problems, using specific vocabulary to infer the operation required to complete the problem. I salute their hard work and am highly impressed by their desire to take risks and be open-minded in their learning! Next week, students will complete a mid-point check-in to assess their learning. We will complete a review activity prior to this check-in.

The Grade 4 students have been working equally hard, exploring factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers. We have been discussing various strategies to find factors of numbers, such as recalling multiplication rules, using a multiplication table, and creating factor rainbows. Students have also practiced finding the greatest common factor (GCF) between two numbers and listing the first 5 multiples of a given number. Additionally, we delved into prime and composite numbers, having wonderful conversations on why zero and one are neither prime nor composite. We will continue our learning into next week and begin exploring strategies for multi-digit multiplication and division.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • Describe how natural events change Earth’s surface.

Grade 4:

  • Make connections between human activity and Earth’s systems.

  • Analyze the interconnectedness of Earth’s systems.

Students are working hard researching their chosen natural disaster/Earth sphere. Many students have begun creating their own Google Slides, writing appropriate titles, adding relevant information, and enriching their learning with visuals. We will be wrapping up this project at the end of next week.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • Revise written texts for accuracy, clarity, or appeal by adding, removing, or changing words or sentences.

  • Edit writing for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

  • Read written texts aloud to check for writing fluency.

Grade 4:

  • Reread written texts to identify what could be added or deleted to enhance creative expression.

  • Revise texts to enhance clarity or fluency.

  • Edit writing for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

This week, students were introduced to writer’s workshops, a way for us to work in small, targeted groups to revise, edit, and strengthen our writing. After being introduced to our 4 focuses, students had the opportunity to choose which workshop they felt would be most useful for their learning. Students had the following options to choose from: Idea Generator, Capitals and Punctuation, Organizing My Ideas, and Juicy Words and Details. We will begin working on our focuses next week.

Ways to Continue Learning at Home:
