April 20th - 23rd

Hello families!

We had an exciting week of learning in room 10, exploring our community for local plants, practicing our basketball skills, and working hard on our Science dioramas. We said goodbye to the lovely Ms. Andreea on Wednesday. The students created a memory book to share with her of some of their fond moments together. We are so thankful to have had her join our classroom and wish her all the best on her teaching journey!

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can recognize interpretations of multiplication and division in various contexts

Grade 4:

  • I can multiply and divide 3-digit natural numbers by 1-digit natural numbers, using standard algorithms

Students in Grade 3 have been applying their skills to solve word problems using the RICE method (Read, Identify, Compute, Explain). In doing so, students followed multiple steps, such as close reading, deciding on the appropriate operation, solving, and sharing their work. The students also worked on a review for their multiplication and division check-in on Monday. These were sent home yesterday to help the students prepare.

The Grade 4s added the standard algorithms for multiplication and division to their bank of strategies. Students are working hard and showing resilience as they try new strategies. We are going to continue to practice these skills as well as work on deciphering and solving word problems. We are hoping to wrap up our multiplication and division unit by the end of next week with a check-in.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can write complete sentences in a logical sequence.

Grade 4:

  • I can write complete sentences and paragraphs in a logical sequence.

Our writing is progressing to more consistently include intriguing paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences that inspire action or interest. This week, the students responded to a picture prompt about bringing home a wild animal. We spent some time thoughtfully planning out our writing by clearly identifying the type of topic, supporting detail, and closing sentences we will be using prior to writing. The students were also supported by a checklist to ensure completion of this task.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can investigate and discuss how plants and animals respond to stimuli in their environments in order to survive.

  • I can explore food chains in local environments.

Grade 4:

  • I can discuss how plants respond to sensory stimuli.

  • I can relate the external structures of plants to their functions.

  • I can find and classify examples of local plants and animals based on appearance, habitat, and structures.

The students worked hard this week to construct their habitat dioramas. The Grade 3s created food chains, including a producer, consumer, and decomposer, arrows to show the direction of energy’s flow, labels, and detailed backgrounds. The Grade 4s created dioramas of local habitats, including a local plant and animal, labels for their plants and animals (omnivore, carnivore, herbivore), and ensured their plants and animals clearly showed 3 body parts that support their survival. These turned out absolutely beautiful. Please make sure to take a look at some of the photos of our students hard at work! Next week, students will write paragraphs to support understanding of their dioramas.

Important Dates and Reminders:

  • April 30th: Spring Dance

  • Please make sure your student is dressed for the weather, as we go outside each day.
