March 30th - April 2nd

Hello families,

We had another great week of learning, returning from Spring Break to a week of snowy weather! We had a fantastic time getting to learn from Ms. Andreea about Indigenous Languages Day, reading time on analog clocks, and playing hockey.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can write complete sentences in a logical sequence.

Grade 4:

  • I can write complete sentences and paragraphs in a logical sequence.

This week, students planned, sequenced, and organized paragraphs on a topic of their choosing. Students worked hard to construct paragraphs with a strong topic sentence, interesting supporting details, and a concluding sentence that left their readers satisfied. This afternoon, students had an opportunity to share their paragraphs with the class during an Author’s Chair. Next week, we will continue writing paragraphs.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can investigate relationships between seconds, minutes, and hours using an analog clock.

  • I can describe time of day as A.M. or P.M.

  • I can express time of day in relation to one 24 hour cycle.

  • I can tell time using analog and digital clocks.

Grade 4:

  • I can relate durations of minutes to fractions of a circle.

  • I can express time of day using fractions.

This week, Ms. Andreea led our Math learning, introducing the students to time and clocks. Students had the opportunity to create their own pocket watches, with second, minute, and hour hands that they colour-coded. Students practiced telling time on both digital and analog clocks, including 24 hour cycles (military time). Students also learned how minutes (15, 20, 30, 40, 45) can be represented as fractions of a circle. We wrapped up our learning with a fun Math Olympics activity, working in teams across 4 centers to practice our time skills. The “Hopscotch Jumpers” was definitely a hit for the class! Next week, the Grade 3 students will work to complete a poster of their knowledge, while the Grade 4s explore elapsed time, converting between units of time, and solving word problems.

Learning Intentions

Grade 3:

  • I can investigate and discuss how plants and animals respond to stimuli in their environments in order to survive.

Grade 4:

  • I can discuss how plants respond to sensory stimuli.

We returned to our plant learning in Science to discuss and explore how plants respond to stimuli (temperature, light, water, gravity, touch) in order to meet their needs. We learned that “tropisms” are ways plants respond to changes in their environment by growing towards or away from stimuli. Our favourite was definitely thigmotropism (touch), where we saw how plants like “touch-me-nots” close up their leaves and venus fly traps eat. To represent their learning, students worked with partners to create posters of plant stimuli with examples and relevant drawings.

Ways to Continue Learning at Home:

  • Have your student read time on an analog clock and represent this time in a 24 hour cycle.

  • Have your student examine their mystery plant for any tropisms they notice.
