May 25th - 29th

Hello room 10 families!

This week in Grade ¾, we enjoyed the nice weather by getting out and playing kickball. The students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, cheering on their teammates and encouraging each other to try their best. Our 3D flower art projects wrapped up and made for a beautiful display at the Volunteer Tea. Students continued working their way through their coding learning. We have also begun our measurement unit in math!

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

  • I can relate millimeters, centimeters, and meters.

  • I can justify the choices of unit to measure length.

  • I can measure lengths of straight lines and curves.

  • I can recognize length in metric units.

  • I can identify referents for a centimeter and a meter.

  • I can estimate length by comparing to a benchmark or visualizing a referent for a centimeter or meter.

Grade 4:

  • I can model area by dragging a length.

  • I can compare non-standard units that tile to non-standard units that do not tile.

  • I can measure area with non-standard units and standard units by tiling.

Grade 3 students are well into their measurement unit, exploring metric measurements such as millimeters, centimeters, and meters. Students have explored various measurement tools that help us measure length and distance, from standard tools like rulers and meter sticks to referents like finger width and wingspan. They have been using these measurement tools to support their learning, especially when estimating length and distance.

Grade 4 students have begun their unit by exploring how area is a measurement of 2D space. They have been looking at how tiling square units can support our understanding of area. Students have also independently made connections to how multiplication can support us in our area calculations (base and height). This was fantastic to see and will definitely support us in our learning next week as we explore standard measurement units.

Ways to Continue Learning at Home:

  • Have your Grade 3 student identify the appropriate unit of measurement for various household objects.

  • Ask your Grade 4 student to find the base and height of various household objects.

Reminders and Upcoming Dates:

  • June 12th: World Cup Day! Wear your favourite soccer jersey.

  • June 25th: Sports Day and report cards are live.

  • June 26th: Last Day of Classes.

Have a great week!
