Hello families!

Room 10 had a great week of learning, beginning two new projects in literacy and math. We’ve been enjoying the springtime weather, practicing our stick handling skills in lacrosse. Students also completed their measurement check-in, which has now been sent home.

Learning Intentions:

Grade 3:

This week, students began working on their exciting "Book in a Bag" project! The focus has been on strengthening their paragraph writing skills as they plan and write a detailed book summary, explain the significance of an object or symbol connected to their story, and begin crafting a book recommendation. Students have been challenged to support their ideas with details and examples from the text while organizing their writing clearly for their audience. Next week, students will bring their projects to life by decorating their book bags and creating their objects or symbols. Students will later be sharing their projects in an oral presentation.

I can identify the perimeter of a shape by finding the distance around it.

Grade 4:

I can measure and record side lengths using square units.
I can determine the area of shapes by counting square units.
I can calculate the area of shapes by breaking them into smaller rectangles.
I can explain my mathematical thinking using numbers, words, and diagrams.

Students began an exciting math measurement project in which they are designing their own pixelated characters using grid paper. This week, students focused on carefully planning their designs, using square units to create characters with specific body parts while ensuring their shapes fit within the grid. Many students also began measuring and recording the side lengths of different body parts, by carefully counting the sides on their polygons. Next week, students continue their side length measurement to support with calculating the perimeter (Grade 3) or area (Grade 4) of their characters.

Ways to Continue Learning at Home:

Ask your student about their pixelated character! What strategies will they use to support their calculations? Are there any challenges they have experienced so far?
Ask your student about the book they have chosen for “Book in a Bag.” Why did they choose this book? How will they convince others to read it?
